The program covers and includes the competencies outlined in STCW Convention Chapter VI and Code Section A-VI/2, Table A-VI/2-1.
Upon successful completion of the full course, participants will be able to:
- Upright a capsized liferaft while wearing a lifejacket.
- Read the markings on survival craft that indicate their capacity.
- Issue proper instructions for boarding survival craft, moving to a safe distance from the ship, operating the craft, and transferring personnel.
- Prepare and launch survival craft safely and move quickly to a safe distance from the ship.
- Safely hoist lifeboats, rafts, and rescue boats.
- Start and operate an engine in open or enclosed lifeboats.
- Row and steer a boat with oars.
- Navigate using a compass.
- Use individual items of survival equipment in survival craft.
- Deploy equipment to aid in locating survival craft.
- Operate portable radio devices for lifeboats and liferafts.
- Use signaling devices, including pyrotechnics.
- Care for casualties during and after abandoning the ship, including using first aid kits and performing artificial respiration techniques.
Entry Standards
To enroll in the course, the candidate must present copies of the following documents along with the originals:
- Certificate of Competency or qualification certificate, or educational diploma.
- Civil passport or personal identification card.
- Seafarer’s Book or Seafarer’s Identity Document.
- Seafarer’s Medical Certificate.
- Certificate proving completion of Basic Safety Training.
- Document verifying at least six months of seafaring experience.
For shortened courses, additional documents are required:
- A completed self-assessment form.
- Certificate of the training course "Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Other Than Fast Rescue Boats", issued within the last 5 years.
- Proof of at least 12 months of seafaring experience within the last 3 years.
